5 Reasons on why you should consider a HVAC career in Singapore

In a recent 2019 article, it was reported that 2 in 5 Singapore employees had planned to switch jobs within a year’s time. The numbers are not surprising given the norm of switching roles in constant search of progression and improvement. If you are someone considering moving to another job, and would like to know more about the Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) industry, you are on the right page.

There is little information out there regarding HVAC careers and we have decided to shed some light for those who might be keen. If you enjoy being outdoors and dislike being stuck in an office, a HVAC career might be great for you. There will always be a demand for workers given that almost every building in Singapore has a climate control system – providing plenty of opportunities available in the HVAC industry all year round. Here, we will share 5 good reasons why you should consider a HVAC career in Singapore.

1) You Are Not Stuck in The Office

Tired of the mundane environment of desk-bound roles? If you enjoy getting out of the office every now and then for work, then maybe a HVAC career is worth considering. Depending on the nature of the service call, you will be able to work in many different places all around town, dealing with various HVAC systems. You will also get to meet and interact with different clients, partners, and stakeholders from time to time. A dynamic role with a change of environment almost every day.

2) Being a Problem Solver

With the CPF payouts starting from age 65, the average Singaporean will be in the workforce between 40 – 50 years which is likely to be most of your lifespan. Majority of people do not want to be a robot at work, slogging their lives out constantly churning out repetitive efforts on a day-to-day basis. In the HVAC industry, every day is a problem-solving opportunity where you will have to face challenges, overcome the obstacles, and attain a sense of achievement and satisfaction by the end of the day.

For example, during repair jobs, a HVAC specialist would need to inspect the systems, troubleshoot why it is not working, and come up with a solution to perform the repair. You will need to have a multi-faceted approach to the role, as it not only takes mechanical skill, but also practical knowledge, technical aptitude, and sometimes social skills to work together with others.

If you enjoy taking on new challenges and can relate to the gratification of problem solving, this may very well be your next industry to consider.

3) Variety of Work

There are many different types of work for a HVAC professional. The most common type of projects are usually air-conditioning installations, servicing, and repairs. But even with that category of work, it can be classified into residential and commercial projects and be branched out into different types of aircon/condenser units, located either indoors or outdoors, etc. It is always different every day and you will never feel that the work is monotonous.

4) Job Stability

As long as there are buildings, be it malls, offices or factories with HVAC systems, there will always be a demand for HVAC professionals to keep them in good working order. There are times when the economy is looking grim and construction or manufacturing jobs may be scarce. However, there will always be a demand for HVAC roles. How is that possible? Simply because, almost every building in Singapore has a HVAC system and we are full of buildings and structures all over the city-state.

If you are looking for job security that can withstand not only the ups and downs of the economic cycle, and even withstand through difficult times such as the Coronavirus (COVID19), then a career in the HVAC industry would definitely be worthy of consideration. Given that Singapore is “summer” all year round, air-conditioning and climate control systems in buildings play a role every day and if you are part of the team that ensures that the systems are in working order, then a job is as secure as the concrete that makes up the building structure.

5) You are the Aircon Hero

Being knowledgeable and experienced in the HVAC industry, you will be an expert to your family and friends when it comes to aircon expertise. Be it providing tips to save on electricity bills or being a hero when it comes to any aircon-related problems, you will be everyone’s favorite contact for any HVAC matters.

It is always about helping others, be it a close one or a customer, resolve their HVAC issues and being their hero for the day. It will be very technical, it will be challenging, but it will also be very rewarding at the end of the session when the troubles are relieved by your very own efforts. If you enjoy helping others and making them happy and comfortable, then this is a role that you should truly consider.
