The process of ageing deteriorates both function and performance of both living things and non-living things. For air-conditioners, ageing may result in the aircon not cooling the room effective or even having abnormal sounds when the aircon is operational. Aside from performance, ageing in air-conditioners can turn the white casing into yellow, which can be a sight for sore eyes even if it doesn’t impede the aircon’s performance. Regular aircon servicing can maintain your aircon’s function, but regular cleaning will not be able to return your yellow aircon back to white. In this article, we will guide you to remove, and get rid of yellow stains from your air-conditioner.
How does my air-conditioner get yellow?
Yellowing is a very common occurrence in ageing air-conditioners. But what causes them to turn yellow? The main reason would be oxidation, be it from exposure to UV rays, heat, or even sulfurization from air pollutants. These would make fundamental changes within the molecular structure of the plastic which eventually results in yellowing. Once the plastic has turned yellow, it is not possible to reverse the process. Therefore, if you wish to avoid the yellowing process, do keep your air-conditioners away from UV exposure, especially if sunlight enters through a window during the day.
How do I remove yellow stains from my air-conditioner?
As mentioned above, there is no way to reverse the yellowing process. However, there are ways to make your air-conditioner look cleaner and whiter. Firstly, you will have to clean the air-conditioner to get rid of any dirt, dust, and grime clinging on. To do so, carefully dismantle and remove the outer casing of your air-conditioner and give it a good rinse. To remove difficult stains, it is recommended that you use a strong surface cleaner to get rid of tough-to-clean dirt. For example, CIF is an affordable multi-purpose cleaner that can help with the job. Available at your local NTUC grocery store, CIF is a brand that we have used over and over again, with good consistency and effective results.
After getting rid of the dirt and stains, give your air-conditioner casing a good wipe down and air it until it is completely dry. Next, you can use a specialized spray to give your air-conditioner casing the white coating again as you can see on our Instagram video. By using this specialized spray, we were able to create a polished white finish on the casing that covers up all the yellowing from before.
